The Introduction explains why the Dutch moment in American history has been overlooked or trivialized and calls attention to signs of the emergence of a new narrative of American beginnings that gives due weight to the imprint of Dutch settlement in America. Gent, het "best bewaarde geheim van Europa", naar de appreciatie van de gezaghebbende reisgids Lonely Planet, mag zich ook verheugen in een toenemende belangstelling vanuit Nederland. Onze fraaie stad valt er zeer in de smaak. Ook komen er heel wat Nederlandse jongeren in Gent studeren aan de universiteit of aan één van de hogescholen. Gent mag dan een te ontdekken plek "in het buitenland" zijn, helemaal afwezig uit het Nederlandse bewustzijn is onze stad nooit geweest. Er is gewoon teveel dat we samen delen. Daar hebben eeuwen van gemeenschappelijke geschiedenis voor gezorgd. Een geschiedenis, die in Gent opmerkelijke sporen heeft nagelaten, herinneringen waarin Nederland prominent op de voorgrond treedt. Daarover gaat dit boek, over "het geheugen van Nederland in Gent", dat in vaak onvermoede dingen en gebeurtenissen verscholen ligt. Het boek serveert daarvan een kleine selectie maar ruim genoeg om verrast en verbaasd te zijn over zoveel Nederland in Gent.
